GREAT RESULTS FOR WABA SURFERS AT INDIVIDUAL TITLES

There were great results for WABA surfers in the Illawarra Individual titles held at Sandon Point on the weekend of 14th - 15th June. The contest was held in 6' increasing to 8' waves, which made for some great surfing but was difficult for surfers to get back out the back after getting a good wave through past the boat ramp. There were three WABA surfers in the open division, Micheal Hopkins, NIck Squires and Hayden Blair. All three surfers progressed through to final. Hoppo was the eventual winner with Nick coming third and Haydo fourth. Craig Morris surfed really well in the solid conditions to win the over 35's division.

On the Saturday the junior division was held in 4 - 5' good quality waves. Although not as big as the Sunday the size of some of the surfers made them look double overhead. In the micro grommets division the always competitive Harry Steele was third in his heat and unlucky not progress through. In the juniors Kurt Lovegrove and Kieran De Boyton were unable to progress through to the second round but both had a good time surfing Sandon Point for the first time with only three other surfers in the water. Congratulations to all surfers for there effort over the weekend.

SAVE SANDON POINT FESTIVAL

The Save Sandon Point surf comp was held on the weekend of June 7th and 8th. The surf had dropped off from the solid waves that they had earlier in the week, although small the waves were clean and fun if sometimes inconsistent. WABA were represented by Ben Hearn, Hayden Blair and two of the competition favorites Nick Squires and Micheal Hopkins as well as Craig Morris in the over 35's division. Both Nick and Hoppo won their round one heats and progressed through to the semi finals where they were eliminated. Craig Morris made it through the first round but was eliminated in the second round. Thanks to Jason Gava and the guys from Sandon Point Boardriders for putting on such great event.

Point Score 25th May

On Sunday 25th of May WABA held a pointscore at Puckeys Creekmouth. The surf was a solid 3' with bigger sets. There were good left and righthanders breaking off the main peak and conditions stayed clean for most of the morning but did deteriorate as the wind turned onshore towards lunch time. The large number of junior surfers that turned up pushed each other to take off on anything they could in the some times sucky conditions. The open surfers had the advantage of being able to surf man on man heats which saw a high standard of surfing from Nick Squires, Hayden Blair, Adam Cartwright, Brad Wilson and Owen Cramp.

It was good to see a number of new members join up and WABA would like to welcome Adam Merideth, Matt Everson, Bill and Dylan. It was also great to see some members past Damian Ward, Rob Choy and Grant Farra return after and extended break.

I would like to remind everyone that it is the responsibility of all surfers to take a turn at judging. If you have not judged before or do not feel confident judging sit next to someone who is a more experienced judge, they will be more than happy to give you a few tips. A big thanks to everyone who helped out, particuarly the girls on the barbecue and don for taking some great photos. The date of the next WABA compitition will be announced soon.

WABA DOMINATES 30 - 10 INTERCLUB CHALLENGE

Last Sunday the 4 th of May saw the running of the Illawarra’s premier inter club surfing contest the 30 - 10. This sees the board riders clubs from Scarborough to Wollongong compete against each other in a format that includes age groups from the under 16’s to over 45’s, a women’s division as well as a tag team competition.

The day started off with everyone meeting at Woonona for a surf check. The surf here was pretty small and struggling to break on the high tide, so the decision was made to move the contest to East Corrimal. The surf here was two to three feet but the wind soon picked up from the south east making things very messy. The first surfers in the water were the under sixteens. WABA were represented by Druon McGovern and Kurt Lovegrove, both representing WABA for the first time in an interclub competition. Both boys surfed well in difficult conditions and against a high class field. The nest surfers for WABA were Josh Noble and Brad Wilson surfing in the under 18’s. Again both surfers easily held their own in the very competitive heats. The open division saw some of the best surfers in the Illawarra competing for their local clubs. WABA was represented by Reagan Cartwright, Hayden Blair and Michael Hopkins who had only four days earlier arrived home after surfing 15 foot waves at Teahaupoo in the Von Zipper trials. Hoppo showed that not only he can he preform in the heavy surf but he can also blow apart on shore crap. Wade Budd and Ryan Doyle surfed in the twenty eight to thirty four year age group and both surf strongly in conditions which continued to deteriorate with the on shore wind. Craig Morris surfed strongly to win the over thirty fives years division and Joe McGovern made the most of the few waves that were coming through in the over forty five years division. In one of the most convincing wins of the day Carmen Boucher used her compition experience to pick off the best waves and win the women’s division. In a close fought heat, WABA president Adam Cartwright took out the presidents heat. The tag team section of the event was an opportunity for WABA to show what a great depth of talented surfers we have. The surfers involved included Owen Cramp, Mabo, Ben Hearn and Seamus Fox. There was even a late entry from Nick
Squires who had been knocked out of the Jesus pro am in Manly earlier in the day and had driven straight down, the whole time ringing Carty every ten minutes telling him that he was on his way and would be there in time to surf for WABA. He ran straight from the car park into the water to smash some off the top turns and put WABA into lead. The other teams were unable to catch up. Overall it was a great team effort by all the WABA surfers. A big thanks to Gob who put in along day in the judges seat as WABA’s representative judge.
